Church History

In 1891 a professor and later president of Livingstone College, Reverend William H. Goler, led forty organizers, most of whom were from Chatham county, North Carolina, in the formation of a church, later named Trinity, in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was a modest and humble setting where the Gospel was preached in a "flat topped framed building" on the corner of Washington and Gilmer Street. Following the purchase of this site in 1894, Dr. Goler began the construction of the first standard church structure on Washington street. Succeeding pastors W. A. Peggans and J. Francis Lee Continued the building process. But it was under the strong and capable leadership of Reverend Richard L. Houston that a magnificent edifice with Gothic Architural features and a sanctuary seating capacity of 700 was completed. As early as 1901, the total membership increased to two hundred and one.

In the period between 1910 and 1960 - the "Big Zion" years (frequently called) - Trinity grew to six hundred in membership. Its financial problems were solved and with the largest seating capacity accessible to the Black community, it was often used for conventions by community, Civic, and fraternal organizations. Pastors serving the church in this era include: Reverends Rigdon Moore, Pickney McCorkle, E.L. Madison (Bishop), J.A. Barber, E. B. Watson, (Bishop) , J. B. Yelverton, W. O. Carson, M.B. Butler, M.F. Gregory, G. F. Hall, W. F. Weatherspoon, S. A. Seay, and M.P. Sawyer.

When Reverend Cecil Bishop (Bishop) arrived in 1960 a program of urban renewal made it necessary for Trinity to consider relocation. Old Trinity was demolished and in 1966 a new church of Contemporary Architecture and a sanctuary with a seating capacity of eight hundred was completed. Under Reverend Bishop's leadership the church purchased "Trinity Garden Apartments", a housing community of 152 units of one, two and three bedroom apartments for low income families. In 1976, Reverend Edgar N. French led a successful campaign to liquidate the mortgage on New Trinity.

From 1979 to 1982, Trinity was pastored by Reverend Vaughn T. Eason, who led the church in hosting the 41st General Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church in May 1980. At this conference the former pastor of Trinity, Reverend Cecil Bishop was elected a Bishop in the A. M. E. Zion Church.

From 1982 Trinity was guided by Dr. Joseph Johnson (Bishop). The highlight of his tenure was the organization of a Centennial Celebration (1981-1991) which was a year long series of events spanning the years. The pastor reached new heights when he was elected a Bishop l in the A.M.E .Zion Church at the General Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in July 1992.

The present pastor, Dr. Michael Angelo Frencher, his wife, Gelenia Aaron Frencher and their children, Michelle and Michael came to Trinity in August 1992. Under the supervision of this superbly prepared and experienced leader, the public address system has been undated, new lights now adorn the sanctuary, the parsonage has been renovated and early morning services have been added. In addition to his work at Trinity, Dr. Frencher serves as Adjunct instructor at Hood Theological Seminary, Livingstone College, Salisbury, North Carolina
